LexP NA [PRO] SC 8/307/15336 1-12
National Archives manuscript SC 8/307/15336, transcribed and edited by Mark Chambers. Information from National Archives catalogue description: Petitioners: Haberdashers and hatters of London. Addressees: [King]. Nature of request: The haberdashers and hatters of London request that whereas the cappers of London have long sought to have the search of all those who make or sell any hood, bonnet or cap in London, for which they lately sued to the King who granted them his letters patent to have this search, that the King annul these letters patent (which remain in Chancery unsealed) and all other evidences in this case, because the cappers' request is to their benefit alone, includes false accusations, and if the cappers were granted the search 3000 poor people of the city and a four mile radius thereof, who make their living out of hoods, bonnets or caps, would go begging because the cappers wish to limit the number of those who work caps, causing a great dearth and driving up prices. Nature of endorsement: [None]. Places mentioned: London. People mentioned: Cappers of London. Date: 1448 (when the guild of haberdashers was founded: cf. CPR 1446-52, p. 164).
