    Definitions and Defining Citations:

1a(n.) Textile; type of cloth, often described as being made of cotton, flax or wool, of various textures and qualities. Described by Anne Sutton as an 'ancient cloth of the Middle East made from flax and cotton; it was soon imitated in Italy, where it became an increasingly important manufacture from the 12th century' [Sutton, A.F. (2005), 4]. In his 1927 study, Herbert Norris defined fustian as 'a material with a linen warp and a cotton woof [or weft], woven with a short looped surface which was sheared and formed a close-set pile. [...] This material was much esteemed as seemly though not costly, as was used for making outer garments of all kinds for the laity, and for vestments for the clergy' [Norris, H. (1927), p. 64]. In modern use, usually applied to a coarse cloth of cotton and/or linen.(ante 1130 - post 1860)
