1(n.) Law/Custom; with regard to cloth and clothing: a measure of fabric varying in length according to material. Length was measured by the yard or the ell, and its breadth by the quarter (of a yard), i.e 9 inches. There were standard measures supported by legislation, but there were many exceptions as it could vary according to the quality of the fabric, its construction, its monetary value, and its place of origin or manufacture [Netherton].(ante 1300 still in current use)
