    Etymological Evidence:

Definite, AF and Middle French pople, etc., a variant of OF popre; cf. Medieval L popellus. The OED notes a relation to 'Middle French (Tournai) pople ... variant of porpre, pourpre fur or cloth of a dark red colour', (cf. purpure, etc.). Forms with -r- are not attested in AND1, MED or OED, but are frequent in L accounts (cf. DOST poper, etc.).
