Decoration; of a textile or garment, covered lavishly all over with decoration, especially embroidery, often in filé, together with appliqués, bezants, pearls or gem-stones; particularly popular in the fourteenth century. Appears in heraldic contexts from a1350 (refering to patterns of roses, stars, garters (symbols of the Order of the Garter), etc. From the sixteenth century, primarily used to describe the pattern of black spots on some fur (ermine, etc.).
