Etymological Evidence:
Speculative, MED and OED3 suggest from Old French renciien, 'from Rheims' in present-day Champagne-Ardenne. OED3 adds, 'probably as the reflex of an unattested post-classical Latin form *remicianus' [s.v. '† rencian, n.', OED Online, Sept. 2013, OUP, 12 September 2013 <http://www.oed.com/view/Entry/162376?redirectedFrom=rencian>].
However, in its entry for 'rancia', 'ranciana', DMLBS suggests variants represent an 'aphaeretic form of Italian arancia < Ar. < Pers. nāranjī = bitter orange; cf. orenga' [Fasc. XIV, p. 2652].
