Etymological Evidence:
Definite, Old French tripe, probably from AF usage (Godefroy defines it as 'étoffe de laine ou de fil travaillée comme le velours', and dates it to 1327; Littré suggests that it is so called from its resemblance to the interior of the paunch of ruminants [s.v. 'tripe 2', OED, 2nd ed. (1989)].
