    Etymological Evidence:

Speculative, this is the older form of the word which came to be banner (q.v.), representing Vulgar Latin banum, bandum (attested from the eighth century on the Continent), apparently from Gothic bandwa, bandwo 'sign', possibly from the same root as band and bind. In post-conquest Insular Latin, the form banera, derived from Old French, was far more common (see banner).
WF: Borrowed into the British Isles
Etym Cog: banner, bandum.
