    Etymological Evidence:

Definite, verbal form from burl (q.v.) 'knot or lump of wool' etc. OED refers to a medieval Latin verb burillare, but no such word is known to DMLBS, nor does it appear in Du Cange. Similarly no parallel Anglo-French verb is attested in AND, while continental Old French/Middle French bourler mean 'to apply stripes or strips' (see burled). Thus this is likely to be a purely English formation.

Etym Cog: burlen.
