    Etymological Evidence:

Definite, adjectival derivation from burre (q.v.) 'flock of wool, padding material', so 'padded'; in this instance used substantively, thus literally 'padded thing'. The Classical cestus was a padded covering for the hand and lower arms, but unlike modern boxing-gloves often were fitted with iron plates and spikes. It is derived from an older caestus < caedo 'cut, strike', and not to be confused with the word cestus, cestos (see cestos) 'girdle', < Greek.
