1(n.) Textile; a gloss of Latin plumaria (q.v.), a type of decoration or embroidery (perhaps involving feathers, or what is known in Modern English as 'feather-stitch'). The Latin term has a number of equivalents in Old English: see also feðercræft, wyndecræft.(ante 1100)

    Etymological Evidence:

Definite, from OE borda 'bordering, decoration' (see border 1). It is theoretically possible that the stem element is in fact OE byrd 'young bird' referring in some way to feathers, but Latin pluma and derivatives is normally rendered literally by OE feðer (see feðercræft), and in OE byrd normally only referred to chicks (adults were fugel 'fowl'.).
