Speculative, DIL suggests that this is perhaps a variant of Latin cappa (see cap); possibly influenced by Gk κεφαλή 'head'. Alternatively and more probably, caphia is a spelling of L. cuphia 'coif' (q.v.), probably influenced by cappa. This word is not in DMLBS.
