kind of woollen cloth or frieze originally associated with or produced in Châlons-sur-Marne, France [cf. Keene, D. (1985), p. 207], often figured; also used attributively ('of chalon', shalloon, and cf. L chalonicus). Also, some kind of pure wool cloth (?), in the 'Ancient Consuetudinary of the City of Winchester' (AND Winchester) the textile is identified as a short cloth woven by 'tapeners', probably on the two-beam loom.
