    Etymological Evidence:

Definite, compound of cork + maker. MED assumes cork here = 'purple/red dyestuff made from lichens' (i.e., Cork 2). However it is possible that cork 'bark of the cork-oak, object made from such material' (i.e. Cork 1) is intended, particularly e.g. in the sense of 'cork soles'. The Coventry Mayor's register, where the word is found, also mentions a person named 'Bened. Corker', i.e. 'one who works with cork'.
