1a(n.) Garment; ecclesiastical vestment; overgarment such as an over-tunic, originally believed to be in the fashion of Dalmatia and introduced by Pope Silvester in the 4th century. The dalmatic is often worn by deacons assisting the priest, taking the form of a long, tunic-like upper garment with wide sleeves and (esp. in modern contexts) having two stripes. Depictions of bishops frequently show the dalmatic worn under the chasuble and over the alb. (Some attestations are unspecified and may more appropriately belong to sense 1b).(ante 700 still in current use)
