    Etymological Evidence:

Definite, a diminutive of Old French escove, from Latin scopa 'broom, besom'; the French word had a wider variety of applications, including cleaning-cloths and coverings, which overlaps with the gloss tersorium. A variant of this form may be the source of French escoullion, English scullion.
