Definite, From Late Latin (as a substantive) derivative of facies 'face'; first recorded in the 3rd century AD in a Greek guise (ϕακιάλιον) but in Latin texts from the 5th cent. The word is not attested in Anglo-French and only known in continental Middle French from the late fifteenth century.
