1a(n.)
Garment;
originally equivalent to a maniple, a cloth or band worn over the left sleeve, usually embroidered, worn by priests and other ecclesiastics at mass (also cf. mappula, napkin). In later uses, a shoulder cape or thin veil or mantle worn about the neck, similar to an aumice but usually worn above the alb. The end of the medieval period saw the development of the papal fanon, the same shoulder cape worn only by the Pope during a solemn pontifical Mass, fequently decorated with stripes of gold.(ante 1200 still in current use)
