    Etymological Evidence:

Definite, Variant of the more common gremiālis, 'pertaining to the lap or bosom'. Cf. Latin gremium, AF grenal. Modern English gremial dates from the sixteenth century and is probably a learned readoption of the Latin word in figurative senses, though n.b. gremial 'silken bishop's apron', attested from the beginning of the nineteenth century in the OED.
