Etymological Evidence:
Definite, compound of hasu, haswe 'grey' + pad (q.v.) 'covering, garment'. Variants hasu-pada and hasewa-pada are found in the texts of the Battle of Brunanburh, the latter being the favoured form in the Dictionary of Old English corpus. A similar colour-based compound was salupad, saluwigpada, meaning 'dark coated' and used of animals, but not apparently of garments or textiles.
