Definite, native Old English word from proto-Germanic *(k)hamiþi- via a form such as *hamiþija-. Cf. OHG hamidi, hemidi 'outer garment, shirt'. The Germanic source also lies behind Latin camisia (q.v.), perhaps borrowed from Germanic via Gaulish. See also hame.
