Definite, borrowed from Old Norse ló 'tuft, flock of hair', from a root seen also in Old Icelandic loð 'hairy, shaggy'; sense 2 may be influenced by ON loði 'fleece/hair garment' and cf. Old English loþa (see entry at lodix).
