    Etymological Evidence:

Definite, From the noun list (see list 1) + suffix -ing (so also a noun from the gerund of the verb list 2). The nautical line sense, with several citations in MED, is unknown to OED, and although it could easily be derived from list 'strip of material' it may be in origin a different word.
