    Etymological Evidence:

Definite, normally derived from a Vulgar Latin type *globuscellum, diminutive of globus (see glomus) 'ball (of thread), quantity of thread'; the parallel form lemoissel < *glomiscellum is known in continental sources. The aphaeresis of the initial g- is hard to explain, but does occur sporadically in French words (cf. Modern French loir 'dormous' < Latin glis, gliris). Alternatively the word is a diminutive form of lice (q.v.; often in Norman and AF luuiz, etc.) 'thread, skein' with different vowel quality.
