    Etymological Evidence:

Definite, Late Latin < from Hebrew me'il מְעִיל. The Biblical term referred to a long priestly vestment, normally adorned with tassels, worn under the ephod (q.v.). Insular knowledge of the word is derived from Isisdore and Jerome.
