    Etymological Evidence:

Definite, from the otherwise unattested AF verb pipelorer 'to decorate, adorn', which is found in several continental Old French texts (also as variant piloper). The anterior etymology is uncertain, but may be a specialized sense of pipel 'pipe', or related to pil 'hair, nap'.
