    Etymological Evidence:

Speculative, OED speculates that the word may be an alteration of burel (q.v.) 'coarse cloth', or more particularly the related word burelé 'striped' (see entry and discussion at burled). For such a change of b- to p-, compare E. pudding < French boudin. The present citation is the only instance from the medieval period, but OED (purrell n.) has examples from the 16th and 17th centuries.
