    Etymological Evidence:

Definite, native Old English word, < a germanic root meaning 'rough, hairy' (cf. German Rauchwaren 'rough wares' = 'animal furs'), cognate with Old Saxon ruwi 'furs, pelts', and the Old Norse source of Old Swedish ryia, Old Norwegian ry 'rug, blanket' (see OED rya, a twentieth-century borrowing of the Scandinavian word via Finnish); the word rug may be related.
