    Etymological Evidence:

Definite, Classical L rostrum, in specialised usage. Although used to refer to a platform for public speaking, the Latin word also referred to the peaked or pointed prow of a ship (which were used to decorate Roman rostra) and this sense led to the equation with ME pike. Attested 1388 and 15th cent. (Latham, s.v. 'rostr/um', p. 411).
