    Etymological Evidence:

Definite, compound of saie (see say 1) + burel (q.v.). Exactly what is intended is unclear; in texts of this date burel normally refers to the fabric (rather than a garment made of the same); saie in this context may mean 'silk' (< Latin saeta) or a heavier cloth or blanket (< Latin sagum); the two senses were confused in French at an early date. The gloss of stragulatus and accompanying Latin explanation make it clear that a striped or panelled textile of more than one colour (and perhaps more than one kind of fabric, though that is not specified) is intended.
WF: Compound
Etym Cog: stragula (L).
