1(n.) Manufacture; excess or waste thread or yarn; unwoven pieces of the warp remaining on the loom after weaving a garment. These pieces were often used to join a second piece of cloth. A similar use of the term is found in the Old English compound tungeðrum, the ligament joining the tongue to the body. Also (fig.), trifle, a worthless thing.(ante 1350 still in current use)
