    Etymological Evidence:

Definite, Anglo-French / Old French vertoile, verteil (etc.) < Latin verticillus < earlier verticulus 'spindle-whorl', a diminutive of vertex, -icis in the sense 'whirlpool, that which spins around'. (OF verteil (see Godefroy), cf. vertel (ModF verteu.)) In some texts there is confusion between this word and AF veroil (see verrel), which is of a different origin.
WF: Borrowed into the British Isles
Etym Cog: whorl, wherve, veroil.
