1(n.) Manufacture; in Classical Latin, the thread wound around the bobbin of a shuttle; the weft thread. In the medieval period, different writers applied the term variously to bobbins, pins which supported spools or bobbins, shuttles, distaffs, or simply to sewing needles. Cf. the diminutive panicula, which had a similarly broad range of meanings.(ante 709 - circa 1440)
