    Etymological Evidence:

Definite, from L. parcere 'to allow, to suffer, to be easy on' + pollex 'thumb'. Used for devices that make life easier on the thumbs, i.e. thimbles, but also apparently a shoe-horn, in that it allows one to easily pull on tight footwear without discomfort to thumbs or fingers (particularly in pulling a heel).
