    Etymological Evidence:

Speculative, probably a borrowing of Old English rocc 'outer garment' etc. (see rokke), + diminutive suffix -án. A borrowing of a hypotheical Old Norse *rokk(r) is not impossible, but Old Icelandic rokkr is only attested in a late text and there apparently < Middle Low German; however, Scandinavian cognates such as Old Swedish/Old Danish rok show the word existed early. OED suggests that the Proto-Germanic root lying behind the various reflexes may be cognate with that seen in Irish rucht (q.v.), the latter with a dental affix and velar quality of the vowel; but this is not certain.
