1a(n.) Garment; cloak or mantle in classical dress. Originally associated with the Greeks (as worn by philosophers). In the Vulgate attestations, it is worn with a tunic. Isidore lists many types of pallium [Isid. Etym. 19,24 and 19,25] including use as a woman's garment.(circa 700 - circa 1000)

Definite, From Classical L pallium. The L form 'pallio' (separate entry) is apparently derived through Anglo-Norman palliun, pallion, ME pallioun, etc.

Johnstone, P. (2002)a states that the use of a pallium as a pontifical vestement begins in the sixth century, then later becomes a vestment bestowed on bishops. In the seventh century, archbishops were required to receive a pallium from Rome before exercising their authority, p. 17.
