Garment;
garment. A general term that refers to garments of different kind, especially hanging garment, wrapping garment or mantle; often relates to the dress of Biblical characters or glosses Greek garments or togas. Also used for clothing of monks and saints. Literary evidence suggests that could be made of various materials. Originally, the stripped hide or skin from an animal, including fleece; according to the Old English Genesis, the first piece of clothing was a reaf made of animal hide. In later uses, the garment is found in many colours, including a bright white (white as snow), describing Christ's garment during the transfiguration. The range of ornamentation is also great. It is found referring to the clothing of both the poor and the wealthy, and used by many types of persons. In Matthew, it refers to a bridal garment, while in Genesis, it refers to a widow's. Aaron wears a reaf in Exodus. In Chrod R1, it appears as the garment for a wife, husband and priest. In the Benedictine Rule, it is a monk's garment, and in Ælfric's Homilies the reaf is the garment for righteous work, cf. vestment.(circa 1000 - ante 1300 ?)
