Garment;
long robe or robe-like garment; a Greek term used for a woman's cloak then a man's garment worn during the Classical period. Medieval representations are found in Biblical and other ecclesiastical sources. Later references to the 'white stole' and the 'first stole' can be traced to New Testament accounts (from the Vulgate 'stolam primam' or 'best robe' in the parable of the Prodigal Son). Also cf. Garment;
specifically, an ecclesiastical vestment; a long narrow cloth, often expensively embroidered, worn by ecclesiastics of the rank of deacon and above, also by abbots. A deacon wore the stole so that it hung down over the left shoulder, priest and above wore it round the neck. The position of the stole was symbolic: wearing it round the neck signified the yoke, or responsibility a priest undertook, or obedience; crossing it at the front acknowledged the cross of Christ.
